Shipwrecks in Filey Bay

While researching his book Lost Trawlers of Hull, Alec Gill wrote that "It soon became clear that Hull's trawling industry was drenched in death from its dawning years," and this statement is true for most of the maritime activities that have taken place off our coast.

In this section we will look at some of the more notable shipwrecks in the Bay, some with happy endings for the crew but some more often than not, spelled tragedy for many families.

We also acknowledge the work completed on local shipping disasters by Arthur Godfrey and Peter J Lassey in their Shipwrecks of the Yorkshire Coast and from which we have checked some details.
